Gas Industry Award 2006

The British Gas Engineering Academy won the Energy Efficiency award. The event is held by the Society of British Gas Industries (SBGI) and Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) to recognise achievements in the Gas Industry.

The award was in recognition of the development of the EnCon CITY programme which is targeting students between the ages of 12-18. It is envisaged that the programme will be complimentary to schools within the UK. The aim is to enable the students to gain knowledge and understanding and raise awareness on energy efficiency and the environment. British Gas also hopes to communicate, through this programme, the commitment they have to the Environment.

The programme is based on an interactive virtual reality city. The students can play the role of a British Gas technical engineer, and through engaging challenges, they are required to improve the efficiency of various houses. The student is presented with an aerial view from an area of a typical city (3D simulation), where they can change the viewpoint to take a closer look. They can seek out other occupant’s comments on energy efficiency, which will give them clues when working through the main challenge. They must explore the city through the separate estates and seek out tell tale signs of energy wastage.
